Sumatra January 2014

Market day from the public bus from Ketambe to Kutcane

A lack of information about travelling to Sumatra has inspired this travel blog.

Travelling around Sumatra can be done in a number of ways. My trip was largely based in the northern part of Sumatra, including North Sumatra and Aceh.

I flew in to Medan to begin our Sumatran adventure. From Medan I took public transport in the form of a small bus to Parapat, from here I then took a ferry to Tuktuk on Samosir Island in Danau Toba.

After spending a few nights at Danau Toba travelled north again towards the jungle. Not wanting to go to Bukit Lawang, we decided to head towards Ketambe, on the western side of the Gunung Leuser National Park. To make this journey from Danau Toba I took a taxi to Berastagi and then a public bus to Kutacane. After which I took a private car to Ketambe after missing the last bechak/public bus.

Following my jungle adventures in Ketambe, I travelled to Banda Aceh. Because it takes about three days via road to Banda Aceh from Ketambe, the easiest route is going back through Berastagi to Medan and then flying to Banda Aceh. This was the method I took in attempting to reach Banda Aceh.

Once in Banda Aceh I took a fast boat to Pulau Weh and another public bus to Iboih Beach. All the destinations mentioned can be seen below in order of visitation.

      Hi Cindy
There’s a ferry to Sabang (Pulau Weh) from Banda Aceh. All the becak drivers know the port it’s about 5km out of town. Ferry times to Sabang change regularly so just ask when it leaves when you get there. There’s a lot of fancy resorts in Sabang, for diving etc. but the place with the most amount of accommodation is Iboih beach. Oongs was the cheapest but there is other cheap accommodation in the area. Prices on this website are probably out of date now as they fluctuate so much!
      Have fun!
